Meshing is a very critical part within the CFD simulation process. Meshing process dictates the simulation time as well as accuracy. Using a highly accurate solver on a very coarse and poor quality mesh, will lead to non-physical or highly inaccurate simulation results. Hence meshing skills, capability and a strong meshing tool are as much of interest as the solver capabilities. Meshing process is a tricky business, during which the user has to maintain sufficiently accurate mesh density as well as ensure that the mesh count is not impractically high.

It is now widely used and has become almost an essential component when it comes to design and analysis of rotating machinery. There is continuous effort to develop automated approaches and standard practices of applying CFD to model flow through rotating machinery. Application of CFD to rotating machinery or turbomachinery produces enhanced performance, shorter design cycles, reduced cost and quick resolution of design issues. Some of the applications of CFD for rotating machinery or turbomachinery flow analysis are turbine blade simulations, complete internal flow simulations of turbomachinery, cavity flows, and heat transfer as well as reactive flow simulations.

CFD which is defined as ‘Computational Fluid Dynamics’ has become an important method to numerically analyse and visualize fluid flow and heat transfer using computer based simulations. It started as a highly specific academic research field and has now grown into a common simulation tool to perform industrial and academic design studies. CFD tools are used hand in hand with experimental methods and reduce product design and development duration to a great extent. They have given rise to what is referred to as ‘numerical experiments for design’ where we can virtually see the effects of various design changes and then zero in on the final prototype design in order to perform experiments.
